Trump-Musk feud live updates: President says ‘Elon has totally lost it’ as bitter public split rages
President Donald Trump and Elon Musk do not appear to be speaking, despite earlier rumors that a phone call might occur following their disagreement over the former’s “big, beautiful bill,” which erupted into a public feud on Thursday.
White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles told NBC News there are no plans for a call between the two.
The president shrugged off the feud in calls with multiple TV networks on Friday morning, dismissing Musk as a “man who has lost his mind,” saying he was “not particularly” interested in reconciliation, and “the poor guy’s got a problem.”
Trump told Bret Baier at Fox News: “Elon has totally lost it.”
The president’s spat with the world’s richest man began when Musk called his signature tax and spending legislation a “disgusting abomination,” urging senators to “kill” it.
A “very disappointed” Trump hit back, claiming Elon knew the inner workings of the bill better than almost anybody and had no problem with it, something that Musk immediately refuted.
He also declared Trump would have lost last year’s election without him, alleged the files on pedophile Jeffrey Epstein are being withheld because they mention the president, and called for his impeachment.

Reporters asked President Donald Trump if he was still considering cutting Elon Musk’s government contracts and subsidies after he threatened to do so on Thursday.
Trump said that Musk “gets a lot of subsidy,” and that he was going to “look at” what he’s getting and consider cutting them, but “only if it’s fair for him and for the country.”
On Thursday, Trump and Musk were embroiled in a public spat that saw the Tesla CEO agree with a call for the president’s impeachment and insinuate that he was on notorious rapist and child sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein’s client list.
Trump responded by threatening to end Musk’s government contracts and subsidies, ostensibly as a way to save the American public money, and questioned why former President Joe Biden hadn’t done so during his time in office.

Lifting an injunction that a lower court judge placed to protect the privacy of Americans, the conservative wing of the court agreed that the DOGE staffers assigned to the Social Security Administration need to access the information to perform their jobs.
“We conclude that, under the present circumstances, SSA may proceed to afford members of the SSA DOGE Team access to the agency records in question in order for those members to do their work,” the justices wrote in an unsigned order.

While the breakup always seemed inevitable due to the egos involved, as well as Trump’s history of shedding one-time loyalists and stabbing them in the back on the way out, the hosts at the conservative cable giant have appeared to be in mourning over their two heroes duking it out.

The feud between Donald Trump and Elon Musk provoked chatter, mockery and amusement among the ruling class in Moscow, where one senior official joked about hosting peace talks and another said Musk should bring his businesses to Russia.
“Elon, don't be upset!” nationalist senator Dmitry Rogozin, who once ran Russia's space programme, wrote on Musk's X social media site. “If you encounter insurmountable problems in the U.S., come to us. Here you will find reliable comrades and complete freedom of technical creativity.”
Dmitry Medvedev, the former president, posted: “We are ready to facilitate the conclusion of a peace deal between D and E for a reasonable fee and to accept Starlink shares as payment. Don't fight, guys!”
The public feud between the U.S. president and the world's richest man was an easy target for Russian politicians who have a history of gloating over perceived turmoil in Washington.
Margarita Simonyan, one of Russia's most powerful state media executives, mocked it as an example of “modern U.S. political culture,” adding: “Sort of like the English Industrial Revolution. Only in reverse.”
Kirill Dmitriev, head of Russia's sovereign wealth fund, who has in the past tried to interest Musk in cooperating with Russia on flights to Mars, asked on X: “Why can't we all just get along?”
He then asked Grok, X's AI chatbot, how Musk and Trump could reconcile.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, when asked about the clash, said it was an internal matter for the U.S., though he was confident that Trump would handle it.
“Presidents handle a huge number of different things at the same time, some more and some less important,” Peskov said.
Others saw a clear benefit for Russia from the feud distracting Washington.
“We can just be glad that they won't have time for us,” said Konstantin Malofeyev, a hardline nationalist tycoon, who said it was now “the best time to strike back” against Ukraine.

The Trump administration asked the Supreme Court on Friday to allow it to proceed with dismantling the Department of Education, an action that would place school policy in the United States almost entirely in the hands of states and local boards.
The Justice Department requested that the court to halt Boston-based U.S. District Judge Myong Joun's May 22 ruling, which mandated that the administration reinstate employees terminated during a mass layoff and cease any further actions to close the department.
The filing said the lower court lacked jurisdiction to “second-guess the Executive’s internal management decisions.”
It added: “The government has been crystal clear in acknowledging that only Congress can eliminate the Department of Education. And the government has acknowledged the need to retain sufficient staff to continue fulfilling statutorily mandated functions and has kept the personnel that, in its judgment, are necessary for those tasks. Per the network:
“There are no plans for that today," Wiles told NBC News when asked about reporting by Politico that White House aides scheduled a call Friday with the billionaire Tesla CEO to try to patch things up between the two men.
Trump is "not interested" in a call, a senior White House official told NBC News.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said Trump is focused on the "One Big Beautiful Bill," the GOP domestic policy bill that Musk trashed, which triggered their falling out. "That's the mindset he left the Oval Office in yesterday," she said.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt appeared on Sean Hannity’s show on Thursday, and downplayed the continuing feud between Elon Musk and President Donald Trump.
She said that Musk has a “right to speak for his companies ... but that Trump has a responsibility to fight for this country.”
Hannity also tried to downplay the feud as just “powerful men” having a “policy disagreement,” and likened it to high school hockey teammates fighting each other only to become friends again the next day.
Musk and Trump aren’t fighting directly, however; they are sniping at each other indirectly over social media. They also aren’t high school boys.
Musk has co-signed a call for Trump’s impeachment and insinuated that the president is a rapist pedophile, and Trump has threatened to end Musk’s government subsidies.

House Democrats are asking the Department of Justice and the FBI whether or not Elon Musk’s claims that Donald Trump is on the Epstein client list are true, according to an Axios report.
Musk accused Trump of being in the Epstein files on Thursday when the two men’s relationship imploded on social media.
Now, Democratic Congressmen Stephen Lynch and Robert Garcia have sent a letter to FBI Director Kash Patel requesting that he “immediately clarify whether [Musk’s] allegation is true.”
The lawmakers requested a timeline for the Department of Justice’s efforts to review and declassify the Epstein files, for a description of Trump’s involvement in reviewing the documents, and an explanation for why previous versions of the client list were heavily redacted, according to the report.
A White House spokesperson told Axios that the Democrats are engaged in “another baseless stunt” in their efforts to undermine Trump.
